‘Australia Day’ by Bridget McLean

It is January twenty-sixth
‘On the barbi’ there are no shrimp
For down under we call them prawns
Now allow me to open up the door.
Blazing sun overhead
Cold drinks balanced on the pool ledge
Every year tends to be the same
But we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Some go down to the beach
Spend the day in the sand
Or wade through the glorious oceans
To have we are so glad.
Some throw an annual party
Dress in blue flags with the Union Jack
Pining to show their devotion
To the place they call great land.
And some do nothing at all
Just relax for it isn’t too big a deal
‘Perhaps we’ll go down to the pub
And eat a classic Aussie meal’.
But Australia is more than beaches and waves
And today is the day we choose to celebrate
Every Australian, however you are
With fireworks that glisten amongst the stars.
Happy Australia Day!
My name is Bridget McLean and I am a 17 year old aspiring author from Melbourne, Australia. From a young age I have been drawn to writing, and it was when I was 7 that I first realised I wanted to become an author. Ever since penning my first picture book entitled ‘Smokey the Cat’, I have fallen in love with losing myself in fantasy worlds of my own creation. I’ve always been a dreamer, and I believe that people everywhere should be encouraged to dream, too. The idea for my book ‘Dragons & Roses’ first entered my mind when I was 12, and 5 years and 3 full length drafts later, I decided that it was time to embark on the journey of putting my story out into the world, alongside my other book ‘Frelescent’, the spark of inspiration for which came to me when I was 14.
To read my stories “Frelesecent” and “Dragons and Roses” on MageQuill, which are now part of the final phase of the ongoing MageQuill Lore Competition, do register on the platform register on the platform here. On the registration page, choose the option “Select from available classrooms” and select the classroom titled “Final Phase” from the drop-down list!
